Will it, Won't it, Will it, Won't it, Will it, Won't it RAIN!
During the summer, house groups take a break. Sometimes
we go for an evening walk.
Whilst we walked around Nunwell on July 10th last year a heavy downpour over Ryde led Jack and Beryl to lay a carpet of newspapers for our return. In fact it hadn't rained at all where we were. On the 16th we returned to Pat & Tony's soaked through to the skin! A week of heavy rain made us wonder what would happen on the 24th - the weather was perfect, as was the 4 mile walk,
Our first walk in 2008 included rather a lot of bullocks!
The second was a stroll through Borthwood Copse. The red squirrels kept their distance but we admired the owls in the rescue sanctuary. August saw us on Mottistone Common where two mares brought their foals to meet us, one of just a few days old. With dusk falling we saw bats
and heard the interminable throb of the nightjar.Cupping the ears helps to locate the position of the nightjars, We enjoyed the gentle stroll with views across to Tennyson Down, Swanage and Bournemouth. As the darkness deepened we saw several nightjars catching moths before we walked back down to the car park, scarcely needing torches.
Following the success of the Midsummer Meanders, we held a longer walk on Saturday September 13th. Despite a ferocious thunder and hailstorm the previous day, the early morning mist melted away into glorious sunshine.
We walked to Bembridge, stopping to admire the view over the harbour. The most intrepid continued to St Helen's and Brading before catching the bus back.
